WHEREAS

  • The mandatory use of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) for long haul inter-provincial transportation was implemented in January 2023,
  • Livestock transporters may be put in the difficult position of either complying with hours-of-service regulations by going off-duty or doing what is best for the animals in their care which is getting them to their intended destination,
  • Live haul drivers, unlike freight transporters, cannot simply pull into a rest area and go off-duty if they unexpectedly cannot get to their destination within their hours of service,
  • Safeguarding the welfare of animals in transport is of paramount importance,
  • Livestock transporters operate responsibly, plan their routes to comply with hours-of-service and include extra time buffers, but nevertheless, on occasion, unforeseen circumstances arise,

We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:

  • Support Bill C-385, which provides flexibility for drivers to ensure the health and safety of live loads and harmonizes Canadian ELD rules with those of the United States by allowing a 240-km radius ELD exemption at the point of origin and destination of the journey carrying livestock or insects,
  • Create regulatory flexibility for the use of Electronic Logging Devices in the Canadian Transportation System.
